Verizon Updates Chaperone Service

Verizon Wireless today added new features to its Chaperone service, making it easier for parents to keep track of their children.

Chaperone 2.0 locates children and understands services they use. It offers:

- The ability to locate multiple Chaperone Child devices at the same time, either from the Chaperone Parent mobile device or the Chaperone website

- The introduction of Family SMS Messaging: Parents will be able to send text messages to one or more Chaperone Child phones from the Chaperone Parent mobile device or Chaperone website

- Integration with VZ Navigator: When a parent locates a Chaperone Child phone from a Chaperone Parent mobile device with a VZ Navigator subscription, they can automatically open VZ Navigator with the address pre-populated and receive turn-by-turn directions to their child’s location

- Enhancements to Child Zones: Parents can add time and date settings to Child Zone SMS Alerts and schedule Child Zone alerts to be sent to the Chaperone Parent mobile device by text message or by email

- The capability to add up to four children within the account to each Child Zone

“Parents have told us they appreciate the notification features Chaperone offers because it gives them the security of knowing where their children are and the ability to locate them when they are carrying their wireless phones,” said Mike Lanman, Chief Marketing Officer of Verizon Wireless. “Now, with Chaperone 2.0, we have added new capabilities that make the service even more useful for parents and for kids.”

Chaperone was originally introduced in 2006. It determines the location of a child’s cell phone using the Internet or another cell phone. When children carry a Verizon Wireless cell phone while on-the-go, the Chaperone website or the Chaperone Parent can view location information or be notified of the whereabouts of the Chaperone Child phone.

Chaperone 2.0 is available for $9.99 per line per month.

With NFL Mobile Live, customers can listen to live radio broadcasts of every NFL game throughout the 2008 regular season. They can also watch all eight Thursday Night Football telecasts beginning Nov. 6. It also carries live radio broadcasts for each game including pregame and postgame reports.

NFL Mobile Live also lets fantasy owners monitor the performance of every player in real-time. Key information for individual players can be accessible, including real-time game and season cumulative stats, rankings, player profiles and photos. And fans can watch video highlights for players.

Fans can get live access to NFL Network’s non-game programming throughout the season including training-camp reports and previews for every team along with popular programs, such as NFL Total Access, NFL GameDay and NFL Playbook. They get the latest news and analysis from training camp through the Super Bowl from NFL.com’s experts along with video highlights of the top plays available each week throughout the season.

BlackBerry Bold Coming to AT&T Mid-September

RIM BlackBerry Bold (9000)

- View Specs

The BlackBerry Bold will be coming to North America within the month now that RIM (Research In Motion) has launched it in Chile and Germany.

The Bold is RIM’s first major BlackBerry model in more than a year. It offers twice the screen resolution of current BlackBerry models. The Bold matches the resolution, but not the size, of the screen on Apple’s iPhone, which has emerged as a competitor in the smartphone market.

AT&T said it will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the Bold, as it is for the iPhone.

Reports expect AT&T to start selling it mid-September and Rogers in Canada to release it late-August. Some stores in Canada have already unveiled store models and fliers.

RIM had announced a summer release for the Bold, but issues with chips and battery life caused a delay. It unveiled the Bold in Chile on July 22 and in Germany on Aug. 6.

The Bold features a glossy metallic frame with corporate Wi-Fi capabilities, 3G high-speed access and Bluetooth connectivity. Similar to the Curve, it integrates a horizontal screen above a trackball and a keyboard with one letter per key.

Verizon has Best Customer Care, AT&T Worst

Verizon Wireless ranks highest in wireless customer care performance, according to a J.D. Power study.

Verizon customers experienced the least amount of time on hold, followed by Alltel, T-Mobile and AT&T. Sprint was not mentioned and has been restructuring its support after developing a reputation for below-average service. Customers report that Verizon performed particularly well in resolving problems in one contact.

“The fact that Verizon Wireless performs well in resolving issues with one contact is particularly noteworthy,” said Kirk Parsons, Senior Director of J.D. Power and Associates. “Overall customer care performance is three times higher among customers whose issues were resolved in one contact over the phone, compared with those who had to contact their provider more than once for the same issue.”

The study also found that the average time wireless customers spent on hold before speaking with a customer service representative in 2008 was 4.4 minutes - up 34 percent from the average hold time in 2003 (3.3 minutes).

Forty-nine percent of wireless customers have contacted the customer care service center for assistance within the past year - an increase from 47 percent reported six months ago. Additionally, among customers who contacted the service department, 34 percent did so due to service / equipment issues.
