Sprint Service Pushes GPS Coordinates, Interactive Maps

Sprint today announced enhancements to its push-to-talk messaging network by adding NextMail Locator, a service that adds GPS coordinates, location timestamps, street addresses and interactive maps to messages.

The company said users will be able to send location, date, time and voice observations to dispatchers, call centers or field workers.

China Mobile to Invest $8.6 Billion into 3G in 2009

China Mobile has announced a plan to invest 58.8 billion yuan (8.6 billion dollars) this year to develop its third-generation network.

The company said it will use the money to build around 60,000 base stations, which connect calls between mobile phones, covering 238 cities. It currently operates over 20,000 base stations.

Verizon Wireless Completes $5.9 Billion Alltel Buyout

Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Verizon Wireless announced it has completed the $5.9 billion purchase of Alltel, making Verizon the nation’s top wireless carrier in terms of subscribers.

Verizon said it will also take on $22.2 billion in Alltel debt.
