Verizon today reported a 15 percent earnings increase for the fourth quarter, as the shrinking economy did little to dampen consumer appetites for wireless, Internet and TV service.
The No. 2 U.S. phone company earned $1.24 billion, up from $1.07 billion a year earlier.

NewsFactor – Apple has approved a stripped-down version of Podcaster, an App Store application that was denied approval last year, and has released an update for the iPhone and iPhone 3G. The original Podcaster competed with Apple’s iTunes.
Reuters – Verizon Communications Inc reported weakness in corporate sales and fewer-than-expected wireless customers for the fourth quarter, and warned that pension costs would hurt earnings in 2009, dragging its shares down as much as 6.5 percent.
PC World – Cell phone users are learning that their devices aren’t immune to bugs, glitches, and poor construction. The Blackberry Storm, released on November 21, 2008, has been particularly affected by these faults, as Research in Motion (RIM) rushed its device to compete with the iPhone.
